Total consolidated sales for the first nine months of the fiscal year ending March 2011 amounted to 488 thousand units, up 90.7 thousand units over the same period of the previous fiscal year.
The termination of the eco-car subsidy program after October delivered a severe blow to domestic auto sales which declined by seven hundred units in total, with a drop of four hundred units in passenger car sales and a three hundred unit decrease in minicar sales.
In overseas markets, sales were up across the board. Sales in the U.S. and Chinese markets were particularly upbeat and rose on a year on year basis in other markets as well due to cutbacks in production and shipments during the first half of the previous fiscal year. The overall sales jump was due primarily to a 68.9 thousand unit increase in sales of the Legacy which was given a full model change more than one year ago as well as a 14.6 thousand unit increase for the Forester which underwent a full model change more than two years ago. Sales of the Impreza were also up with a 12.1 thousand unit jump in sales. These increases brought total sales in overseas markets up 91.4 thousand units.
